Balen Shah Becomes Nepal’s Prime Minister, PM Modi Extends Support for Stronger India-Nepal Ties

Balen Shah Sworn in as Nepal PM, Modi Congratulates

A new chapter has begun in Nepal’s political landscape as Balen Shah assumed office as the country’s Prime Minister, marking a significant shift toward youth leadership, transparency, and reform-driven governance.

After years of political power struggles among traditional leaders, Shah’s rise is being widely viewed as a symbol of change and the beginning of a “New Nepal.” His appointment reflects growing public demand for accountability, innovation, and development-focused politics.

Congratulating the new leader, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral ties between India and Nepal. In his message, Modi said the trust placed in Shah’s leadership by the people of Nepal was commendable and reaffirmed India’s commitment to elevating the historic partnership between the two neighboring nations.

The statement is being interpreted as a strong signal of enhanced regional cooperation and strategic collaboration between the two countries, whose relations remain deeply rooted in shared history, culture, and economic cooperation.

Nepal’s President Ram Chandra Paudel officially appointed Shah as the country’s 47th Prime Minister under Article 76(1) of the Constitution. He took the oath of office and secrecy during a ceremonial event held in Kathmandu, attended by senior political leaders, the Vice President, Chief Justice, former prime ministers, and top government officials. Traditional Hindu rituals and ceremonial conch sounds added cultural significance to the swearing-in ceremony.

Shah’s political journey has been equally remarkable. He first gained national attention after winning the Kathmandu mayoral election in 2022 as an independent candidate, earning public trust through a clean image and performance-oriented governance. Later, he entered national politics through the National Independent Party and secured a decisive victory in the recent parliamentary elections.

In a major political upset, Shah defeated former Prime Minister K. P. Sharma Oli from the Jhapa-5 constituency by a significant margin, reshaping Nepal’s political landscape.

Political analysts believe Shah’s leadership could usher in administrative reforms, stronger governance, and renewed public confidence while opening new opportunities for regional stability and cooperation in South Asia.
