PM Modi to Review Energy Situation Amid West Asia Conflict; Mamata Banerjee Raises Lockdown Concerns

PM Modi Reviews Energy Crisis; Mamata Warns of Lockdown

The ongoing conflict in West Asia has intensified global concerns after disruptions in oil and LPG supplies caused by the reported closure of the Strait of Hormuz. The situation has raised alarm in several countries, including India, over potential energy shortages and rising fuel prices.

Amid growing uncertainty, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to hold a virtual meeting with Chief Ministers on Friday to review the country’s energy situation and discuss preparedness measures in light of the escalating Iran–United States tensions.

Meanwhile, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed concerns over the possibility of a nationwide lockdown due to fuel supply challenges. Speaking on Thursday, Banerjee said that the central government could consider imposing restrictions similar to those seen during earlier crises.

The Trinamool Congress chief drew comparisons with the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, which were conducted during the COVID-19 pandemic. She stated that even if such measures are implemented, they would not prevent her or her party from contesting elections against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“They may impose a lockdown and restrict people to their homes. I faced a similar situation in 2021 and I am capable of fighting under any circumstances,” Banerjee said.

Referring to rising gas prices and concerns over supply shortages, the Chief Minister alleged that discussions about another lockdown were being considered. However, she added that such steps would not silence the voice of the people.

The developing geopolitical situation in West Asia continues to impact global energy markets, prompting governments worldwide to closely monitor fuel supply chains and economic implications.
