Long-term consumption of gas relief medicines without medical supervision can lead to serious health complications, including weak bones, kidney problems and vitamin B12 deficiency, warned renowned nutrition dietitian Dr. Archita Mahajan.
Dr. Mahajan, a Nutrition Dietitian and Child Care specialist with a Master’s degree in Food Nutrition and Dietetics, Homeopathic Pharmacist, and trained Yoga Teacher, has been nominated for the Padma Bhushan National Award and honored by the Punjab Government, Himachal Pradesh Government, and Ladakh Lieutenant Governor Kavinder Gupta.
She explained that many people regularly consume gas tablets without consulting doctors, which may severely affect overall health over time.
Major Health Risks of Excessive Gas Medicine Use
Kidney Damage:
Certain gas medications, especially Proton Pump Inhibitors (PPIs), when used for a long duration, may damage kidneys and increase the risk of kidney stones.
Weak Bones:
Prolonged use can interfere with calcium absorption, weakening bones and increasing fracture risk.
Higher Infection Risk:
Reduced stomach acid allows harmful bacteria to grow easily, raising the chances of stomach and intestinal infections.
Nutrient Deficiency:
Low acid levels can hinder absorption of essential nutrients such as Vitamin B12, calcium, magnesium and iron, leading to nutritional deficiencies.
Digestive Complications:
Dependence on medicines may cause indigestion, bloating, constipation and diarrhea.
Medicine Dependency:
Some individuals develop dependency, and symptoms may worsen when medication is suddenly stopped.
Impact on Other Organs:
In certain cases, side effects may also affect vital organs like the liver and brain.
