HP Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania Interacts with Students During Budget Session

HP Speaker Pathania Meets Students During Budget Session

Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly Speaker Kuldeep Singh Pathania stated that the smooth functioning of the House depends on harmony, coordination, and cooperation between the ruling party and the opposition.

Before the commencement of proceedings during the ongoing Budget Session, nearly 150 students from the National Law University Ghandal, the Department of Law at Himachal Pradesh University, and Auckland House School, Lakkar Bazaar, Shimla visited the Vidhan Sabha and interacted with the Speaker at Council Chamber Gate No. 1 to understand the functioning of the Assembly closely.

During the interaction, students asked several questions related to legislative proceedings, the role of the Speaker, the formation of the Assembly, and the functioning of the Council of Ministers. Responding in detail, the Speaker explained that India’s parliamentary system is based on a federal structure, with Parliament at the central level comprising the Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha, while states have their respective legislatures. He added that larger states may also have a Legislative Council.

Pathania informed the students that he was unanimously elected as the Speaker of the 14th Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly and that his primary responsibility is to ensure impartial and smooth conduct of House proceedings, which requires cooperation from both the treasury benches and the opposition.

Motivating the students, he said that law students are future advocates and judges who will play a vital role in strengthening India’s democratic system.

During the discussion, he cited the examples of prominent freedom movement leaders — Motilal Nehru, Jawaharlal Nehru, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, and Dr. Rajendra Prasad — noting that many of them were distinguished barristers who made significant contributions to India’s independence and the establishment of democracy.
