Jandiala Guru to Get First Sewage Treatment Plant by May; 70% Work Completed

Jandiala Guru STP Project Nears Completion by May

The first Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Jandiala Guru city is expected to be completed by the end of May this year, marking a major step toward improved urban infrastructure and environmental protection in the region.

The Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board is constructing the project at a cost of ₹24.13 crore. The plant will have a treatment capacity of 6 MLD (Million Litres per Day), along with a 17 MLD pumping station currently under development.

Punjab Public Works Minister Harbhajan Singh ETO reviewed the progress of the project and stated that nearly 70 percent of the construction work has already been completed, with a target set to make the facility operational by May.

The minister explained that once the plant becomes functional, wastewater from the city will be treated and reused for agricultural irrigation. Currently, untreated sewage flows into seasonal drains, contributing to environmental pollution.

The project, which began in December 2024, includes modern treatment facilities such as MBBR (Moving Bed Biofilm Reactor) technology, a chlorination contact tank, and a primary treatment unit to ensure effective wastewater purification.

According to the minister, the establishment of the STP will prevent untreated sewage from entering local drains, helping conserve the environment and improve sanitation standards. In the next phase, treated water will be supplied directly to farmers’ fields for irrigation purposes.

Approximately 35,000 residents of Jandiala Guru are expected to benefit from the project. Apart from reducing pollution levels, the initiative will also provide a sustainable alternative water source for agriculture.
