Amritsar: The construction of an open-air theatre at the Virsa Vihar Complex, dedicated to renowned Punjabi playwright Bhai Gursharan Singh, also known as Bhai Manna Singh, has remained incomplete for nearly one and a half years, drawing concern from local residents and cultural organizations.
The Improvement Trust had allocated ₹1.5 million for the construction of the theatre, envisioned as a cultural venue to honor the legacy of the celebrated dramatist. However, the contractor allegedly abandoned the project before completing the work.
In a joint statement, Society President Keval Dhaliwal and Secretary Ramesh Yadav said contractor Harpreet Singh left the open-air theatre unfinished despite partial construction. Gallery steps were built and lanterns installed, but several key components remain incomplete.
According to the society members, only boundary walls, tiling work, a bathroom, and one room were constructed. They further stated that neither the room nor the bathroom has electricity or lighting facilities, making the structure unusable.
After the matter was reported to the Improvement Trust, SDO Raminderpal Singh Kahlon assured residents that pending work would be completed. However, locals claim the issue has not been taken seriously and no further progress has been made.
The Trust has now appealed to the district administration to conduct an inspection of the open-air theatre and ensure the remaining construction work is completed at the earliest so the facility can serve cultural and community activities.
