Union Telecommunications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia has said that India is now prepared to lead the world in next-generation communication particularly in 6G Technology.
Speaking at the News18 Rising Bharat Summit, Scindia noted that India had historically lagged behind in mobile technology adoption, whether it was GSM, 2G, 3G, or 4G. However, he emphasised that the 5G era has transformed the country’s global standing in the telecom sector.
India achieved the world’s fastest 5G rollout within just 22 months, backed by an investment of nearly ₹4.5 lakh crore. Today, approximately 35 percent of the country’s mobile users are on 5G networks, marking a significant technological shift.
“We kept pace with the world in 5G, but our goal is to lead the world in 6G,” Scindia said.
He highlighted that Prime Minister Narendra Modi envisioned the launch of the Bharat 6G Alliance in 2023. The alliance serves as a collaborative platform bringing together companies, scientists, startups, researchers, and stakeholders across the entire technology value chain.
Initially launched with just 15 members, the Bharat 6G Alliance has now expanded to 100 members. India has also established partnerships with 30 countries, including the United Kingdom, the United States, Brazil, and several African nations.
Scindia stated that India is actively working with these countries to define global standards for 6G technology. Unlike earlier technology generations, where India had limited participation in international standard-setting discussions, the country is now positioned at the decision-making table.
The minister’s remarks underscore India’s ambition to transition from being a technology adopter to becoming a global technology leader in the coming decade.
