Amid ongoing controversy over the alleged police encounter in which Ranjit Singh — accused in the Adiya check post double murder case — was killed, residents of Akhlaspur village gathered in large numbers to pay tribute to martyred police officer Ashok Kumar and demand strict punishment for those responsible for his killing.
Villagers, family members, and local leaders assembled at the native village of the slain officer, expressing grief and anger over the brutal murder. They urged authorities to ensure that all accused involved in the killing of two police personnel at the Adiya check post in Gurdaspur district receive the harshest possible punishment.
Speaking to the media, Mamta Sharma, daughter of the martyred officer, said her father was killed mercilessly and demanded that the accused be given exemplary punishment so that his soul may rest in peace. She thanked the Punjab Police and Gurdaspur Police for extending full support to the family. She added that police officials are in constant contact with them and have initiated paperwork related to providing a government job to her brother.
Ashok Kumar’s younger son, Abhishek Sharma, shared that his father’s ashes have been placed near a peepal tree close to their home, and the family remembers him day and night. He stated that documents related to his elder brother Sandeep Kumar’s employment have been taken by officials and appealed to the Punjab Government to expedite the job process so the family can sustain itself.
Local dignitary and former chairman Wazir Singh Lali also addressed the gathering, appreciating leaders from various political parties and police officials who visited the family to share their grief during this difficult time.
The family further appealed to Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to ensure that Sandeep Kumar is given a government job before March 4, the date scheduled for Ashok Kumar’s “bhog” (final religious ceremony).
The tragic killing of the police officer has deeply shaken the region, with residents demanding swift justice and government support for the bereaved family.
