MLA Dr. Ajay Gupta, who represents the Central Assembly constituency, conducted an inspection of the Khapar Kheri STP (Sewage Treatment Plant) along with Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill, officials of the Municipal Corporation, and the Punjab Water Supply and Sewerage Board.
Dr. Gupta stated that the Khapar Kheri STP in Amritsar was originally constructed in 2012 with a treatment capacity of 95 MLD (million litres per day). However, due to the expansion of the Central Assembly constituency and a rise in commercial establishments, nearly 110 MLD of sewage water has been flowing into the plant daily.
He explained that the plant’s limited capacity resulted in untreated water overflow and backflow issues, causing persistent sewerage problems in the city.
After conducting a detailed assessment, Dr. Gupta said he approached Arvind Kejriwal, Manish Sisodia, and Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann to initiate the process of enhancing the plant’s capacity. He informed that the expansion project, costing approximately ₹96 crore, began in May 2025.
According to the MLA, around 35 percent of the work has been completed so far. Officials have been directed to ensure that the project is completed by November 2026 to provide relief to residents facing sewerage issues.
Dr. Gupta remarked that the issue had not received adequate attention in the past and thanked the AAP leadership for supporting the project.
Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill said that the work is progressing at a good pace and is being closely monitored. He added that CCTV cameras are being installed at the project site to ensure transparency and quality control.
Senior officials including Supervising Engineer Jitin Vasudev and other engineering staff were also present during the inspection.
The Khapar Kheri STP expansion is considered a key infrastructure project aimed at improving sanitation and wastewater management in Amritsar.
