Panic gripped Chandigarh -Sector 17 on Tuesday afternoon after a gunshot was fired inside an ATM at an HDFC Bank branch. The incident left one person injured and sparked fear among bank employees and nearby shopkeepers.
According to reports, the firing took place while cash was being deposited in the ATM cabin. The security guard, identified as Netrapal, was seated at the entrance of the ATM when his firearm allegedly slipped from his hand and accidentally discharged. The bullet struck his hand, causing injuries.
He was immediately rushed to Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGI) for treatment, where he is currently undergoing medical care.
The sound of the gunshot created chaos inside the bank, with staff members and customers initially fearing a major security threat. People from nearby showrooms also rushed out after hearing the noise. However, it was later clarified that the firing was accidental.
Police reached the spot soon after receiving information and assessed the situation. Preliminary investigations suggest that the firearm went off unintentionally. Authorities are continuing to probe the incident.
The situation is now under control, and further action will depend on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
