Early Cancer Detection and Treatment Can Save Lives: Dr Abhinav Mahajan

Cancer is a life-threatening and often incurable disease, but early detection and timely treatment can significantly increase survival chances, said Dr Abhinav Mahajan, Oncologist at Cancer Hospital Amritsar, located opposite ENT Hospital on Majitha Road in Amritsar.

Dr Mahajan explained that cancer occurs when cells in the body grow uncontrollably and spread to other parts. There are many types of cancer, and their causes vary. While some cancers are considered aggressive and difficult to cure, early diagnosis, precautionary measures, and appropriate medical treatment can help prevent complications and save lives.

Causes and Risk Factors

According to Dr Mahajan, certain cancers are genetically linked, such as breast cancer and colon cancer. Smoking remains one of the leading causes of cancer, particularly lung cancer. Excessive alcohol consumption increases the risk of cancers of the mouth, throat, and liver.

He further noted that certain viruses and bacteria, including Human Papillomavirus (HPV) and Hepatitis B virus, can also contribute to cancer development. Exposure to radiation, harmful chemicals such as radioactive substances, and environmental pollution in air, water, and soil can significantly raise cancer risks.

An unhealthy diet high in fats and sugar is another contributing factor.

Prevention and Healthy Lifestyle

Dr Mahajan emphasised that cancer prevention begins with adopting a healthy lifestyle. He advised consuming a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and adequate protein. Regular exercise—at least 30 minutes daily—can help reduce cancer risk.

He also urged people to quit smoking and limit alcohol consumption. Avoiding unnecessary radiation exposure and protecting oneself from pollution by wearing masks and maintaining a clean environment were also recommended.

Regular health screenings such as mammography and colonoscopy play a crucial role in early detection and successful treatment outcomes.

Dr Mahajan concluded that awareness, preventive measures, and timely medical intervention remain the most effective weapons in the fight against cancer.
