The Delhi Police has registered an FIR against quick-commerce platform Blinkit for allegedly selling prohibited button-operated knives, commonly known as switchblades, in violation of Indian law.
The action comes after two separate murder cases were reported in the Khayala area of West Delhi. During interrogation, the accused reportedly revealed that the knives used in the crimes were purchased through Blinkit.
Police Investigation
Following the disclosure, Delhi Police officials reportedly placed orders on the platform while posing as customers. The knives were delivered without restriction, confirming that the items were available for sale.
Subsequently, police conducted raids at multiple Blinkit dark stores across Delhi and recovered more than 55 button-operated knives.
Authorities stated that the easy availability of such weapons could contribute to rising criminal activities, making strict enforcement necessary.
Legal Provisions
Under the Arms Act 1959, switchblades and automatic knives are classified as prohibited arms. Selling, manufacturing, possessing, or offering such weapons for sale is illegal.
Violations of Section 7 of the Arms Act can attract action under Section 25(1AA), which carries a minimum sentence of seven years imprisonment and may extend to life imprisonment, along with a fine.
Police have initiated further legal proceedings and are expected to issue a formal notice to Blinkit. Investigators are also examining how the prohibited knives were listed on the platform and supplied to customers without regulatory checks.
How Blinkit’s Model Works
Unlike open marketplaces, Blinkit operates through partnerships with brands, distributors, and authorized suppliers. Products are stocked in company-operated dark stores (mini-warehouses) and delivered directly to customers.
Vendors partnering with Blinkit are required to provide mandatory documents such as GST registration and other regulatory approvals. Authorities are now probing whether due diligence protocols were followed before listing the restricted items.
Ongoing Probe
Delhi Police officials confirmed that further investigation is underway to determine accountability at the company and supplier level. The case highlights growing concerns over the regulation of weapon sales through online and quick-commerce platforms.
