In a significant development, the Punjab and Haryana High Court has directed both the Central Government and the Punjab Government to reassess the security threat perception of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia.
The court has instructed authorities to conduct a fresh threat assessment and submit a report in a sealed cover. It has further directed Punjab’s Chief Secretary and Director General of Police (DGP) to examine the matter and present their findings before the court.
Until the next hearing, the Punjab Government has been asked to ensure adequate security arrangements for Majithia.
The matter has been listed for further hearing on March 6. Notably, Majithia had approached the High Court last year challenging the reduction of his security cover.
The court’s directions are seen as an important step in reviewing the security framework concerning political leaders in the state.
