Election Commission Suspends 7 AEROs in West Bengal Over SIR Irregularities

EC Suspends 7 AEROs in Bengal Over Irregularities

The Election Commission of India has ordered disciplinary action against seven Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) in West Bengal over allegations of serious irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process.

Two officers from Canning Purba constituency and one each from Suti, Maynaguri, Samsherganj, Debra, and Farakka constituencies have been suspended. The Commission has directed the concerned cadre controlling authority to initiate disciplinary proceedings immediately and inform the Commission without delay.

In a letter addressed to the West Bengal Chief Secretary, the poll body stated that evidence points to serious misconduct, negligence of duty, and abuse of lawful authority by the officials involved in the SIR process.

Meanwhile, acting in compliance with the February 9 directive of the Supreme Court of India, the Election Commission has issued strict instructions regarding the disposal of Form-7 objections linked to the revision process.

In a separate communication to the State’s Chief Electoral Officer, the Commission directed that all submitted Form-7 applications must be immediately forwarded to the respective Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and AEROs. It emphasized that each objection must be examined and resolved strictly in accordance with the law.

The move signals a firm stance by the Election Commission to ensure transparency, accountability, and adherence to due process in electoral roll revisions in West Bengal.
