Violence Down 80% in Kashmir, Says Amit Shah

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has stated that violence in Kashmir, the North-East and Maoist-affected regions has reduced by nearly 80 percent following the abrogation of Article 370. He expressed confidence that these regions will soon become completely free from violence.

Addressing the 79th Raising Day celebrations of the Delhi Police, Mr Shah said Maoist extremism, once spread across 11 states, had long posed a serious challenge to India’s internal security. However, he emphasized that sustained security operations and policy reforms have significantly weakened extremist networks.

On the occasion, the Home Minister laid the foundation stone for a new Delhi Police Special Cell Integrated Headquarters aimed at strengthening policing in the national capital. The modern facility will be built at an estimated cost of ₹345 crore and is expected to become one of India’s most advanced centres to combat terrorism and narcotics trafficking.

The state-of-the-art complex will feature a modern indoor firing range, a war room, a cyber lab, training halls and advanced operational equipment to enhance efficiency. Mr Shah said the headquarters would serve as a model Special Cell facility for police departments across the country.

He also inaugurated the first phase of the Safe City Project, dedicating the Integrated Command, Control, Communication and Computer Centre to the people of Delhi. Built at a cost of approximately ₹857 crore, the centre aims to strengthen surveillance, emergency response and urban policing infrastructure.

Highlighting the government’s broader security reforms under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mr Shah said several milestones have been achieved over the past eleven years, including the introduction of three new criminal laws designed to modernize India’s justice system.

Delhi Police Commissioner Satish Golcha said that under the Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyan, the force seized over 6,000 kilograms of narcotic substances last year as part of intensified anti-drug operations. He added that the Special Cell, in coordination with central agencies, is tracking 32 fugitive criminals operating from abroad, with two offenders successfully extradited to India last year.

In a significant move to combat cybercrime, Delhi Police has become the first force in India to register suo motu FIRs in cyber fraud cases involving amounts exceeding ₹1 lakh, marking a major step toward dismantling the cybercrime ecosystem.

The announcements underscore the Centre’s continued focus on strengthening internal security, counter-terrorism efforts and modern policing infrastructure across the country.
