World Bank Team Reviews Progress of Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Project

World Bank Reviews Amritsar Water Supply Project

A team from the World Bank visited the city to review the progress of the Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Scheme (ABWSS), aimed at ensuring uninterrupted supply of clean drinking water to residents.

The ambitious project is being implemented by the Municipal Corporation with financial assistance under the Punjab Municipal Services Improvement Project. Once completed, treated water from the Upper Bari Doab Canal will be supplied to households across the city.

As part of the scheme, a modern water treatment plant with a capacity of 440 million litres per day is being constructed near Vallah. Additionally, work is underway on 45 new overhead water tanks and 112 km of pipeline, out of which 95 km has already been laid.

During the visit, World Bank representatives Rosana Nitti and Srinivas Rao Podipireddi inspected ongoing construction at 100 Feet Road, Gol Bagh, Old Sabzi Mandi, near the SSP office, and the water treatment plant site at Vallah. They later held a review meeting with Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill.

The World Bank team appreciated the quality of work and expressed satisfaction over the construction standards being followed. The Commissioner informed that necessary instructions had been issued to Larsen & Toubro regarding labour shortages, and the workforce has now been increased to accelerate progress.

Officials including Project Manager Kuldeep Singh Saini and SE Project Jitin Vasudeva were also present during the review. The project is expected to significantly strengthen Amritsar’s water supply infrastructure and ensure safe drinking water for citizens in the coming years.
