Joint Forum Protests Illegal Garbage Dumping in Ranjit Avenue D & E Block, Amritsar

Ranjit Avenue Residents Protest Illegal Garbage Dump

An emergency meeting of the Joint Forum was held to strongly protest against the illegal dumping of garbage in Ranjit Avenue’s D and E Blocks near Amrit Anand Park and ITI College in Sri Amritsar Sahib. Residents and forum members expressed serious concern over the environmental and health hazards caused by the Municipal Corporation’s actions.

According to the forum, the land allocated to ‘Avarada Company’ for parking purposes was allegedly being misused for garbage dumping in violation of environmental norms. The matter came to light during a hearing before the National Green Tribunal on February 3, 2026, where the Municipal Corporation submitted an affidavit acknowledging the dumping site.

Following the Tribunal’s directions, the Corporation deployed JCB machines and vehicles to remove the waste. However, residents alleged that partially decomposed garbage mixed with polythene was scattered around the site, which continues to pose health risks to nearby schools and local inhabitants.

The Punjab Pollution Control Board has also confirmed the illegal and anti-public activities. Taking a strict stance, the Board directed the Corporation to immediately stop dumping garbage at the site and imposed a substantial penalty for endangering public health and polluting the environment. The Board further instructed that all waste be transported directly to the Bhagtanwala dump without further scattering.

Residents pointed out that repeated memorandums had been submitted to the Municipal Corporation and the government by local citizens, including representatives of Baba Ishar Singh institutions and Guru Harkrishan Public School. The issue was even raised in the State Assembly, but no permanent solution has been implemented so far.

The case is being pursued by Supreme Court advocates Sameer Sood and S. Sharanjit Singh Padda. Office bearers of the Joint Forum of Welfare Associations of Ranjit Avenue urged the Municipal Corporation and Amritsar Improvement Trust to ensure clean air, water, and a healthy environment for the citizens of Guru Ram Das Ji’s holy city.

Forum members expressed hope that the authorities will relocate the garbage dumping site to a suitable location, prioritize public health, support the Swachh Bharat mission, and create a positive impression on domestic and international tourists, thereby strengthening Amritsar’s economy.
