Commuters across Punjab are likely to face major inconvenience as workers of Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS and PRTC have announced a statewide strike on February 12. The contract workers’ union has declared a complete chakka jam from the afternoon, citing the continued incarceration of union members and opposing the government’s alleged move towards privatisation.
Gherao at Chief Minister’s Residence
As part of their protest, employees have announced plans to gherao the residence of Chief Minister in Sangrur, demanding the immediate release of their fellow union members.
PRTC employees have alleged that raids are being conducted at the homes of the Punjab president and other state committee members in an attempt to arrest them. According to union leaders, some members have already been arrested in Muktsar Sahib and Ferozepur. They claim the government is attempting to suppress their voice.
Talks Fail to Reach Agreement
According to information, employees held a meeting with the State Transport Secretary at 12 noon on Wednesday. The meeting reportedly lasted nearly six hours, but no consensus was reached on their demands.
Union leaders said their primary demand during the talks was the release of arrested leaders. However, with no breakthrough achieved, they decided to go ahead with the strike.
Services Likely to Be Affected
The strike is expected to significantly impact bus services operated by Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS and PRTC across the state. Daily commuters, including office-goers and students, may face severe disruptions.
Passengers are advised to check service availability in advance and make alternative travel arrangements where necessary.
