Bharat Bandh Today: Schools and Colleges Likely to Be Affected in Several States

Bharat Bandh Will Schools Remain Closed

Several trade unions have called for a nationwide Bharat Bandh today, leading to concerns about disruptions in services, including educational institutions.

A joint platform of labour and farmer unions has given the call for a countrywide strike on February 12. It is estimated that nearly 30 lakh workers may participate in the protest.

Which Services May Be Affected?

The strike is expected to impact several sectors depending on the level of participation. Public sector banks, insurance companies, government offices, state transport services, certain industries, and construction units could face disruptions. Major industrial sectors such as coal and steel may also be affected.

In rural areas, work under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGS) could be halted in places where protests are widespread.

However, officials have clarified that emergency services will function normally. Hospitals, ambulance services, emergency medical facilities, milk supply, and medical stores are expected to remain operational. Metro services in some cities may also continue without disruption.

Private offices, IT companies, and educational institutions are likely to function based on local conditions and state government decisions.

Are Schools and Colleges Closed?

As of now, no nationwide holiday has been officially declared for schools and colleges. However, in states like Kerala, where trade unions and student organizations are strong, educational institutions may remain closed due to participation in the strike.

In states such as Karnataka and Odisha, transportation disruptions or local support for the bandh could affect attendance. Students and parents are advised to check with their respective institutions for official updates. District administrations are expected to issue clarifications where necessary.

Political and Farmer Support

The Congress party has extended its support to the strike and directed its state units to stand with workers and farmers. Farmer organizations have also backed the bandh, raising concerns over issues such as wage hikes, privatization, and protection of the agricultural sector.

Farmers are particularly worried about the ongoing India–US trade discussions, fearing that increased imports of foreign agricultural products could impact domestic incomes.

Expected Impact

Analysts believe the bandh’s impact may be more visible in states like Kerala and Odisha, where trade unions have a strong presence. Overall, the strike is expected to have a moderate to significant effect on daily life in parts of the country.

Citizens are advised to plan travel and official work accordingly and stay updated through local authorities.
