Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has decided not to preside over or attend House proceedings on moral grounds until the no-confidence motion notice submitted against him by Opposition members is addressed as per parliamentary rules.
The notice was submitted to the Secretary General of the Lok Sabha by Opposition parties on Tuesday. According to sources within the Lok Sabha Secretariat, the notice will now be examined and processed in accordance with established procedures.
A total of 118 Members of Parliament from various Opposition parties have signed the motion. These include representatives from the Congress, DMK, Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, and Left parties. However, MPs from the Trinamool Congress did not sign the notice.
Parliamentary sources indicate that further action on the notice will depend on procedural scrutiny and compliance with rules governing such motions. The development marks a significant moment in the ongoing political dynamics within the Lower House.
More clarity is expected once the Secretariat completes its examination of the notice and communicates the next steps.
