North India Braces for Heavy Snow and Rain as New Western Disturbance Approaches

The weather is set to take a dramatic turn in northern India, with the Meteorological Department forecasting a strong western disturbance entering the region from February 9. Punjab is expected to see rainfall starting February 10, while the weather will remain mostly dry for the next six days.

Himachal Pradesh is already witnessing extreme cold. Temperatures in Lahaul and Spiti’s Kukumseri dropped to -14.9°C, prompting the Met Department to issue a yellow alert for Friday, February 6. The warning covers Mandi, Kangra, Hamirpur, and Bilaspur districts, where dense fog could worsen conditions.

In Jammu & Kashmir, Ladakh, and Himachal Pradesh, rain and snowfall are expected on February 6. Another fresh western disturbance is predicted to hit the Himalayan region on the night of February 8, bringing heavy snowfall and rainfall between February 9 and 11. Uttarakhand will also experience the effects of this system, with the higher reaches expected to see significant snow accumulation.

Authorities have urged residents in affected areas to stay cautious, particularly in fog-prone regions and higher altitudes, where travel may be disrupted due to snow and icy conditions.
