Gig Delivery Workers Strike on New Year’s Eve: Swiggy, Zomato Face Major Disruptions Across India

Last-minute food orders, party groceries, and quick deliveries may grind to a halt tonight as delivery workers from Swiggy, Zomato, Blinkit, Zepto, Amazon, and Flipkart launch a nationwide strike on December 31, 2025.

The action, called by the Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU) and Indian Federation of App-Based Transport Workers (IFAT), follows a similar walkout on Christmas Day to ramp up pressure on platforms during peak demand. Workers in metros and tier-2 cities like Pune report falling incomes despite long hours, sudden account blocks without explanation, payment delays, and unsafe routes assigned by apps.

Key Demands

  • Fair wages and stable earnings amid rising costs and workload.
  • End to ultra-fast delivery targets (like 10-minute groceries) that force risky road behavior and endanger lives.
  • Job security, including protection from arbitrary ID suspensions and better complaint resolution.
  • Social security benefits, safety gear, and welfare support for gig workers.

Potential Impact

Platforms could see widespread outages for food, groceries, and e-commerce on one of their busiest nights, with some restaurants already turning to non-striking third-party services like Porter—though even those may join by January 1. Unions emphasize that customer convenience shouldn’t override worker dignity and health in India’s gig economy.
