Weather conditions in Himachal Pradesh shifted on Thursday morning as clouds covered several mid and high-altitude regions, including the state capital Shimla. The Meteorological Department has forecast light snowfall over higher peaks in Kullu, Lahaul-Spiti, Kangra, and Chamba districts, while some mid-hill areas may experience light drizzle. Clear weather is expected to prevail in the plains.
According to the department, fair weather will persist across the state on December 27 and 28, but light snowfall may return to higher altitudes on December 30 and 31 under the influence of a weak western disturbance, likely impacting only limited areas. The update has renewed hopes for snow among both residents and tourists heading to the hills for the New Year.
Meanwhile, the Met centre has issued an orange alert for dense fog in Bilaspur district, warning of reduced visibility below 50 metres. A yellow alert has also been issued for Hamirpur, Mandi, Kangra, Solan, and Sirmaur districts. Motorists have been advised to drive cautiously during early morning and late evening hours.
Meteorological scientist Sandeep Kumar Sharma said dense fog is expected to persist in Bilaspur during morning, evening, and night hours over the next two days, which may further intensify the chill and disrupt road and air traffic.
Despite widespread cloud cover, daytime temperatures remain 3°C to 6°C above normal, and most towns are recording minimum temperatures 2°C to 4°C higher than average. However, the impact of fog and cold is more pronounced in lower-lying areas during mornings and evenings.
