Amritsari Kulcha GI Tag Meeting to Be Held on June 19

Amritsari Kulcha GI Tag Meeting Punjab Govt Initiative

Amritsar (Suraj Kamlesh): The Amritsari Kulcha GI Tag initiative has moved forward as the Punjab government’s Food Processing Department has called an important meeting on June 19 in Amritsar. The meeting will take place at the Deputy Commissioner office and will focus on advancing the Geographical Indication (GI) tag process for the famous Amritsari Kulcha.

Moreover, the step aims to protect the identity of this iconic food item and safeguard the rights of local artisans. As a result, the Amritsari Kulcha GI Tag process has gained significant momentum in the state.

Punjab Government Takes Initiative to Protect Food Heritage

The Food Processing Department stated that Amritsari Kulcha represents Punjab’s unique culinary heritage. However, imitation products in different regions have affected its originality and the livelihood of local makers.

Therefore, the department has prioritized the Amritsari Kulcha GI Tag to preserve its authenticity and cultural value.

What is GI Tag and Why It Matters

A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a legal certification under the GI Act, 1999. It identifies products that originate from a specific region and possess unique qualities.

Moreover, the GI tag protects traditional products from misuse and ensures economic benefits for local producers. Consequently, the Amritsari Kulcha GI Tag will help strengthen both identity and business value.

Coordination Committee to Be Formed

To move the process forward, authorities will form a coordination committee. It will include:

  • Punjab State Council for Science & Technology (PSCST)
  • Food Technology Department, Guru Nanak Dev University
  • District Administration Amritsar
  • Food Processing Department representatives

In addition, the committee will work to form an association of kulcha manufacturers. Therefore, the Amritsari Kulcha GI Tag application process will gain proper structure and legal support.

Key Meeting Scheduled for June 19

Officials have scheduled the meeting for June 19 at 12 noon in the committee room of the Deputy Commissioner office, Amritsar. The meeting will include officials from concerned departments and leading kulcha manufacturers.

Moreover, the administration has appointed the Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) as the nodal officer for arrangements. As a result, the Amritsari Kulcha GI Tag process will move ahead in a coordinated manner.

Call for Participation from Manufacturers

The district administration has appealed to major Amritsari Kulcha manufacturers to participate in the meeting. Their involvement will help create a strong association required for GI registration.

Furthermore, their participation will ensure accurate representation of traditional practices. Consequently, the Amritsari Kulcha GI Tag initiative will move closer to official recognition.
