New Delhi: CM Mann Flags Punjab Border, Flood and Special Status Issues at NITI Aayog during the 11th Governing Council meeting of NITI Aayog chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Chief Minister strongly presented Punjab’s long-pending demands and highlighted key challenges faced by the state.

Moreover, CM Bhagwant Mann urged the Centre to address Punjab’s border-related security concerns, disaster losses, and economic needs through targeted support and policy intervention.

Punjab Seeks Special Package for Border Areas

CM Mann demanded a special revival package for Punjab’s border districts, stressing that these regions face continuous security and economic challenges.

Furthermore, he called for special category status for Punjab on the lines of Himalayan and northeastern states, with a 90:10 funding model to boost development.

Border Security and Drug Threat Highlighted

While addressing the meeting, the Chief Minister highlighted Punjab’s 553-km-long international border with Pakistan.

He pointed out persistent challenges such as cross-border terrorism, drone-based smuggling of drugs and weapons, and rising drug addiction among youth. Additionally, farmers working near the border face daily operational difficulties.

Flood Losses and Disaster Impact

CM Mann also raised concerns over massive flood damage in the state.

He stated that the 2025 floods impacted over 2,300 villages and caused losses worth approximately ₹12,905 crore. Moreover, he urged the Centre to provide adequate compensation and long-term disaster relief support.

Demand for Fair Development Support

In addition, the Chief Minister highlighted disparities in central schemes and development support for Punjab.

He criticized limited inclusion of border villages under national programmes and called for a more balanced approach to regional development.

Investment and Industrial Concerns

CM Mann also pointed out that border uncertainty has discouraged industrial investment in several districts.

As a result, many regions have witnessed slow economic growth and relocation of industries. He urged focused policies to revive investment and create employment opportunities.
