Chandigarh: Punjab Leads in Maternal and Child Health after the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) report showed the state outperforming national averages in key healthcare indicators. Punjab has emerged as one of the top-performing states in healthcare delivery across the country.
The report highlighted major improvements in maternal mortality, infant mortality, neonatal mortality, and child healthcare outcomes. Dr. Balbir Singh shared that Punjab’s Maternal Mortality Rate dropped to 77 per lakh live births, better than the national average of 87. The Infant Mortality Rate in Punjab stood at 16 compared to the national average of 24. Similarly, the Neonatal Mortality Rate was recorded at 11 against the national average of 18, while the Under-5 Mortality Rate stood at 19 compared to the national average of 28.
The Health Minister said Punjab had already achieved the SDG 2030 target for Neonatal Mortality Rate by bringing it below 12 before the deadline.
He also stated that due to the state’s strong healthcare performance, Punjab is likely to receive nearly Rs 400 crore as financial incentive under the Central Government’s new performance-based healthcare scheme.
