Shimla (Kameshwar Sharma): A major student agitation erupted at Himachal Pradesh University as the SFI’s Fierce Protest Shakes Shimla Campus intensified on Friday. The Student Federation of India (SFI) staged a fierce demonstration inside the Arts Faculty campus, shaking the university atmosphere.
Moreover, students raised strong slogans against the university administration, accusing it of pushing higher education toward privatization through continuous fee hikes.
Students Protest Against Rising Fees
Protesting students stated that education is a fundamental right, not a business. However, they claimed that the university administration is steadily increasing financial pressure on students through multiple fee revisions.
In addition, students argued that hostel charges, examination fees, transport costs, and other academic expenses have already become too high. As a result, many students from middle-class and economically weaker backgrounds are struggling to continue their studies.
30–40% Fee Hike Proposal Triggers Outrage
SFI leader Akhil strongly criticized the proposed decision of the university’s Executive Council.
He stated that the council meeting held on 28 April 2026 recommended a 30–40% fee hike. Furthermore, he said the organization completely rejects this proposal, calling it anti-student and unjustified.
Consequently, he warned that such a move would restrict higher education only to privileged sections of society.
Education Should Not Become a Business: SFI
SFI representatives said that public universities must focus on affordable and quality education. Moreover, they emphasized that education cannot be treated as a commercial product.
In addition, they blamed the state government for reducing the education budget, which they believe has forced universities to increase student fees.
As a result, they argued that the fee hike shifts the financial burden unfairly onto students and their families.
Demand for Immediate Rollback of Fee Hike
The student organization demanded the immediate withdrawal of the proposed fee hike. Furthermore, SFI called for a complete halt to the commercialization of education in Himachal Pradesh’s public universities.
They also stated that the SFI’s Fierce Protest Shakes Shimla Campus movement will continue until the administration reverses its decision.
In addition, student leaders warned that failure to act will result in a larger and more united student movement across the campus.
Campus Atmosphere Turns Tense
The protest created a tense atmosphere inside the university campus. Moreover, large groups of students gathered in support of the agitation, raising concerns over the future of higher education affordability.
Consequently, the administration faced increasing pressure to respond to student demands and initiate dialogue with representatives.
Warning of Intensified Movement
Student leaders cautioned that if the fee hike is not withdrawn, SFI will escalate the protest further. In addition, they announced plans to mobilize students across departments for a wider agitation.
Finally, they held the university administration responsible for any escalation of unrest on campus.
