Amritsar (Suraj Kamlesh): In a major step toward modern urban governance, the municipal administration of Amritsar has fast-tracked key Smart City initiatives under the World Bank and AIIB-supported programs highlight Water & Digital Work Speed Up. A high-level review meeting was held to assess progress on water supply, digital records, and GIS-based property mapping.
The meeting was conducted under the directions of Municipal Commissioner Bikramjit Singh Shergill, while Additional Commissioner Jaidevinder Singh reviewed ongoing project implementation.
Focus on PIMSIP Urban Reforms Project
Officials reviewed the progress of the Punjab Municipal Services Improvement Project, which aims to improve municipal services and strengthen e-governance systems across Punjab.
The project also focuses on digitization of civic records, improved service delivery, and modernization of urban infrastructure in collaboration with international financial institutions.
Digital Records Transformation Gains Momentum
A major highlight of the review meeting was the rapid digitization of old municipal records. Officials informed that birth and death registration records are being prioritized for digital conversion.
The records are being scanned and stored in high-quality 300 DPI resolution to ensure long-term preservation and easy access. This move is expected to significantly improve transparency and administrative efficiency.
GIS Survey Enhances Property Mapping
The GIS-based property survey is also progressing at a fast pace. Around 42 surveyors have been deployed to accelerate the process.
According to officials, nearly 800 to 1000 properties are being surveyed daily. This digital mapping initiative will help improve property tax assessment and urban planning in the city.
Major Progress in Water Supply Project
The Amritsar Bulk Water Supply Scheme is also witnessing steady progress under the Smart City mission.
Officials from Larsen & Toubro reported that work on the water treatment plant at Walla is advancing rapidly. The raw water reservoir from the Upper Bari Doab Canal is expected to be filled soon, allowing testing to begin.
Power connectivity for the project is also nearing completion, with 66 KV transmission infrastructure largely in place.
