New Delhi: On the occasion of Buddha Purnima, the Delhi government has declared 1 May as a dry day in the national capital. On this day, all liquor shops, bars, hotels, restaurants serving alcohol, and retail outlets across the National Capital Region (NCR) will remain completely closed, with a total ban on the sale and distribution of alcohol.
The decision has been taken by the Delhi government to maintain public order, ensure smooth management of gatherings, and promote respectful observance of religious and nationally significant occasions. Officials stated that such measures are routinely implemented on important cultural and religious days to maintain discipline and social harmony.
According to government sources, the dry day restriction is not limited to 1 May alone. Several additional dry days have also been scheduled in the coming months on key festivals, national events, and important observances. During these periods, the sale, purchase, and distribution of alcohol will remain strictly prohibited across Delhi and NCR regions.
Authorities have confirmed that enforcement will be strict, and all licensed establishments are required to comply fully with the order. Surprise inspections and monitoring drives are also expected to ensure that no violations take place during the restricted days.
The Delhi government has also prepared a broader regulatory calendar, which includes multiple dry days between May and September as part of its annual administrative planning. Officials believe that advance scheduling helps businesses and the public remain informed while ensuring better compliance.
The move is aimed at ensuring smooth public arrangements, maintaining law and order, and preserving decorum during culturally, socially, and religiously important days. It also reflects the administration’s effort to balance public convenience with traditional observances and civic responsibility.
