Shimla (Kameshwar Sharma): In a major success under its anti-drug campaign, Shimla Police registered a case under FIR No. 30/2026 under Section 20 of the NDPS Act at Police Station Kumarsain on April 24, 2026, following the recovery of a commercial quantity of charas.
Acting on a sustained drive against drug trafficking, Shimla Police successfully foiled an organised smuggling attempt by recovering a large consignment of narcotics, which is considered one of the significant seizures in recent times.
According to official information, a police team from Police Station Kumarsain, in coordination with the Special Cell Shimla, was deployed for routine patrolling and checking near Sainj Chowk on NH-305, Luhri road. During the operation, based on reliable intelligence, an HRTC bus bearing registration number HP66A-5181, operating on the Kullu to Baga Sarahan route, was intercepted for inspection.
During the checking process, a suspicious passenger was identified as Pankaj Kumar, son of Shri Lehar Raj, resident of Upper Dhah village, PO Upper Dhah, Tehsil Palampur, District Kangra, aged 30 years.
In the presence of independent witnesses and following proper legal procedure, a search of the accused led to the recovery of 5.652 kilograms of charas concealed in a backpack. The recovered contraband falls under the commercial quantity category as defined under the NDPS Act, making it a serious punishable offence with stringent legal consequences.
The accused was immediately arrested on the spot and will be produced before the Hon’ble court. Further investigation into the case is currently underway.
Shimla Police has registered 108 NDPS cases against 229 drug traffickers so far this year and successfully dismantled 19 major inter-state and international drug networks. This ongoing crackdown has significantly curtailed the supply of narcotics to youth across the region.
