NIT Kurukshetra Student Suicide Sparks Protest, Fourth Case in Two Months

NIT Kurukshetra Student Suicide Sparks Protest

Kurukshetra: A tragic incident has surfaced at the National Institute of Technology Kurukshetra, where a 19-year-old student allegedly died by suicide in the girls’ hostel, triggering protests among students.

According to police, the deceased has been identified as Diksha Dubey, a second-year B.Tech student from Buxar district in Bihar. She was pursuing Artificial Intelligence and Data Science and was residing in Room No. 441 of Kaveri Hostel.

Reports state that Diksha returned to her room after attending classes. Later in the day, when her friends came to meet her and received no response, they informed the administration. Officials arrived at the scene and, upon checking through a window, found her hanging from the ceiling fan. No suicide note was recovered, and the exact reason behind the incident remains unclear.

A forensic team has been called in, and police have initiated an investigation into the matter.

The incident has sparked outrage among students, as it is reportedly the fourth such case on campus between February and April. Students staged protests late Thursday night, alleging negligence by the administration and raising serious concerns over student safety and mental health support.

Protesters claimed that the body remained unattended for a considerable time and accused faculty members of dismissing their concerns when questioned. They also criticized the effectiveness of a committee formed after previous incidents, stating that it failed to address student issues.

Students have now demanded a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) into the repeated incidents.

Amid growing unrest, the institute administration has reportedly declared holidays and asked students to vacate the campus.

The incident has once again highlighted the urgent need for stronger mental health support systems and accountability within educational institutions.
