Punjab Govt Seeks Extension of Amritpal Singh’s Detention in Dibrugarh Jail

Punjab Seeks Extension of Amritpal Singh’s Detention

Chandigarh: The Punjab Government has taken a significant step regarding Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh by requesting the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to ensure his continued detention in Dibrugarh Central Jail even after the expiry of his detention period under the National Security Act (NSA).

According to sources, the state government has written to the Union Home Secretary seeking approval to keep Amritpal Singh lodged in the Assam jail by obtaining consent from the Assam Government. The request has been made under provisions of the Prisoners Transfer Act, 1952, along with the Punjab Amendment Act, 2025.

The government has urged for an early decision so that further legal procedures can be completed on time, citing concerns related to security and law and order.

It is notable that Amritpal Singh was arrested on April 23, 2023, after remaining absconding for nearly a month. Earlier, on February 24, 2023, a case was registered against him at Ajnala Police Station in Amritsar after he and his supporters allegedly attacked the police station to free an associate. Following the incident, Punjab Police launched a large-scale crackdown.

Since his arrest, he has been detained under the National Security Act in Dibrugarh Jail. His detention period was extended in April 2024 and again in April 2025, and is now set to expire on April 22, 2026.

Punjab Police and intelligence agencies have expressed concerns that his release could adversely impact the law and order situation in the state.

It has also been reported that nine of his associates, who were earlier detained with him in Dibrugarh Jail, have already been shifted back to Punjab after the expiry of their NSA detention period. However, the government considers Amritpal Singh’s case distinct and has emphasized the need for special arrangements to continue his detention.
