Punjab Passes Sacrilege Bill 2026 with Strict PunishmentThis bill is being seen as more than just a legal amendment—it reflects years of public sentiment and ongoing debates surrounding incidents of sacrilege in the state. The government claims that the law addresses gaps left by previous administrations by ensuring faster investigations, non-bailable offences, and stringent punishments.

Strict Punishments Introduced

Speaking in the Assembly, Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann stated that no accused involved in sacrilege cases will be spared. As per the new law:

  • Punishment ranges from 5 years to life imprisonment
  • A fine of up to ₹20 lakh can be imposed
  • Individuals aiding or supporting such acts will also be held equally accountable

Political Reactions and Government Stand

The Chief Minister also targeted previous governments, accusing them of seeking votes in the name of religious sentiments without taking concrete action.

He emphasized that his government is fully committed to preserving the sanctity of Guru Granth Sahib and ensuring strict action against offenders.

The passage of the bill marks a significant step in strengthening legal measures against sacrilege and aims to deter such incidents in the future.
