8 Inmate Suicides Reported in Sabarmati Jail

The issue of inmate suicides in Sabarmati Jail was raised during the ongoing Budget Session of the 15th Gujarat Legislative Assembly, sparking debate over prisoner safety and mental health.

During Question Hour, Congress MLA Imran Khedawala sought details from the Home Department regarding the number of suicides reported inside Sabarmati Central Jail over the past two years, up to January 20, 2026.

In response, the state government informed the Assembly that eight prisoners had died by suicide within the jail premises during the last two years.

When asked about the reasons behind these incidents, the Home Minister stated that stress and fear of punishment were identified as major contributing factors. The government further informed the House that inquiries are being conducted as per established rules to determine accountability.

The matter brought renewed focus on prisoner welfare, mental health support systems and overall safety conditions inside correctional facilities. Lawmakers emphasized the need for improved monitoring and counseling mechanisms to prevent such incidents in the future.

The issue of inmate safety remained a key topic of discussion in the Assembly as the session continued.
