108 & 102 Ambulance Workers’ Strike Intensifies in Himachal, Services Disrupted

Himachal Ambulance Workers Strike Disrupts Services

Shimla: The protest by employees associated with 108 and 102 ambulance services in Himachal Pradesh has intensified, with hundreds of workers continuing their agitation for the second consecutive day despite heavy rain. The five-day statewide strike, being held under the banner of CITU, has severely disrupted ambulance services across the state.

On the second day of the strike, employees gathered outside the Himachal Pradesh Secretariat in Chhota Shimla, demanding immediate action from the government regarding their long-pending issues. The union warned that if their demands are not addressed soon, the protest will be intensified further.

Addressing the gathering, union leaders alleged that pilots, captains, and EMT staff working under the Medswan Foundation as part of the National Health Mission have been facing exploitation for a long time. They claimed employees are not being paid the government-mandated minimum wages despite working shifts of up to 12 hours daily, with no overtime compensation provided.

Union representatives also stated that despite directions from the Himachal Pradesh High Court, Labour Court, and other authorities, there has been no improvement in working conditions. They accused the management of mentally harassing employees who raise their voices, including forced transfers, suspension from duty without valid reasons, denial of leave, and intimidation.

The union further alleged irregularities in the implementation of EPF and ESI benefits, resulting in financial losses for employees. Leaders added that earlier workers employed under GVK EMRI were not paid retrenchment compensation, gratuity, notice pay, or other dues after termination of services.

Employees have demanded payment of minimum wages as per rules, double overtime for 12-hour shifts, guaranteed leave benefits, salary protection during vehicle maintenance periods, and immediate implementation of judicial orders. They also called for correction of EPF-ESI discrepancies and protection of workers’ constitutional rights.

The union warned that if the government fails to respond, the agitation will escalate further, holding both the government and management responsible for the consequences.
